Press Release of June 2005 - “Relic Hunters – Treasure Island”
Mystic sounds on the search of the golden Madonna
The magic that is inherent in a lost treasure has always been fascinating to mankind. Thus, even today treasure hunters and historians are searching for the Lima treasure on the Isla del Coco, situated in the Pacific Ocean close to Costa Rica. A life-size Madonna made of pure gold. The task, the composers Boesel and Rolletter have been confronted with, was to “create tension, fascination and adventure just as in old Pirate movies” and to compose a “main motive in many variations.”
The composers found their inspiration to start with brass instruments in Stevensons’ novel “Treasure Island,” in crystal clear water, and the illusion to eventually find what so many have been looking for. The brass presents the main theme. Like a signal, a single horn resounds and is accompanied by a kettledrum. Trombones and trumpets take over, strings, woodwinds and percussion join one by one. Slowly tension and volume rise. As climax, the entire orchestra plays the main theme “tutti,” and accompanies the search for the treasure in a slightly pushing fashion.
The images of Costa Rica are accompanied by acoustic guitars and percussion, which reminds discreetly of Middle America.
During the fascinating and dangerous underwater shots, the divers are being surrounded by manta rays and sharks. While sunshine floods the water and presents the underwater world in bright colors, synthetic sounds with orchestra instruments sensitively blend into this world. During the search on the island, the hunters are accompanied to the dark caves by rhythmic drumbeats and a changing sonority.
The fascination “treasure“remains. The x on the treasure map an illusion on Treasure Island. An indispensable myth. The Madonna remains in the covert whereas the melody wafts over the ocean and lures new adventurers.
